The State of California recognized Rancho Santa Fe's historical significance in 1989 by designating the community as a state Historic Landmark.Since July 14, 1927, the Rancho Santa Fe Association, a homeowners' association, has been a non-profit corporation. It enforces the Protective Covenant, which requires the Association to preserve the rural character of the community and its natural landscape, to uphold the quality of architectural and land improvements and to maintain the health, safety and general welfare of its members.
The Rancho Santa Fe Covenant area covers approximately 6,200 acres in northwestern San Diego County. This area contains 1,814 residential building sites, 361 of which are unimproved. It is estimated that the maximum numbers of building sites that could exist under current zoning restrictions is 2,256. The population of Rancho Santa Fe is about 4,700 people. Access to the Covenant area is provided by county roads form the north, south (San Dieguito area), east (Escondido) and west (Solana Beach and Encinitas).
There is a strong sense of community involvement in the Covenant, from the Garden Club to the RSF Community Center. For the residents, the Association has assembled a considerable hiking and riding trail system. This system is composed of rights-of way, easements and Association property totaling nearly 25 maintained trail miles. An additional eleven miles of trail are shown on the Association trails master plan for future acquisition and development. The Rancho riding Club provides horse boarding and riding instruction in a variety of disciplines. Priority is afforded Association members. By virtue of its location, the Club enjoys excellent access to the community trail system.
The Rancho Sante Fe Schools are considered by many to be the best in San Diego County. The Rancho Santa Fe School District provides programs for grade kindergarten through eighth. At the present time, there are 460 students enrolled, with the number reasonably dispersed across the grades. There are two classes at each grade level. The average class size is approximately 23. Older students who live within the Covenant area attend Torrey Pines High School.
