Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club Spring Lecture Series

Rancho Santa Fe residents 50 and older are invited to take part in the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club’s upcoming lifelong learning courses starting in June.

This annual series features intellectually challenging, non-credit courses taught by local professors and experts in their respective fields. This year’s offerings include two six-week options, open to both members and non-members.

Professor Jack Williams, in partnership with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, will lead his class through a course titled “The Movie Camera and the Ballot Box: Hollywood and Politics”. This course description reads:

From an early date, filmmakers used the media to advance various ideas that involved political motives. American cinema has been used to spread unethical propaganda and to promote genuine enlightenment. At times, individual movies have gone beyond the overt political intentions of filmmakers to create their own unintended ideological consequences. What are the major political themes seen in the movies over time? How has Hollywood responded to the politics offered by rival centers of film making in Asia and Europe? In what ways have recent films reflected, or rejected, contemporary American values?

A second course titled “The Art of the Renaissance” will be taught by professional art historian, educator and metaphysical researcher, Douglas R Barker M.A:

Are you planning a trip to Italy, the Low Countries or Germany? Fascinated by art? Wishing to enrich yourself culturally? Art history can fulfill a number of purposes but the sheer enjoyment of beautiful works of art and architecture and a desire to know more about their origins and purpose is reason enough! In addition, the study of the careers of some of the greatest artists in the history of Western art can provide life-enhancing inspiration and change. Douglas R. Barker will take you on a slide-illustrated journey through European art and architecture from 1350 to 1600.

Drew Brees Celebrity Championship Golf Tournament

Rancho Santa Fe Library Spring Author Talk

Rancho Santa Fe residents will have an opportunity to meet a highly-regarded author and former US Navy SEAL as part of the Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild’s spring author talks.

Brandon Webb will discuss the riveting story about his life so far and about writing his memoir about his time as a US Navy SEAL, The Red Circle. The event will take place at a private residence in Rancho Santa Fe on May 18. Guests can enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the reception. Celtic Celebration with Camarada

Camarada was formed in 1994 in order to bring chamber music to the public, playing unique music in intimate settings. Mozart’s “Turkish Concerto”

The San Diego Symphony will present Mozart’s "Violin Concerto No. 5 (Turkish)" and Bruckner's "Symphony No. 4" twice this week. During his prolific career, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed twenty-seven piano concertos. Despite being an accomplished violin player, he wrote only five violin concertos, all written in 1775 when Mozart was nineteen years old. The fifth and final violin concerto, written a month before he turned 20, has become his most popular. It was influenced by a cultural fascination with all things Turkish, considered at the time to be both exotic and somewhat dangerous. Because of these musical undertones, the concerto is often nicknamed “Turkish.”

The program will feature the San Diego début of Augustin Hadelich, a rising star in the violin world. Born in Italy to German parents in 1984, Hadelich studied at Juilliard under Joel Smirnoff. He has achieved much critical acclaim and his débuts have been well-received internationally. He will be playing on the 1723 “Ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari violin, on loan from Clement and Karen Arrison. Jahja Ling, San Diego Symphony Music Director, will be conducting.

A special Jacobs Masterwork weekday performance will be held Thursday, March 15th at 7:30 PM. A second performance will be held Saturday, March 17th at 8:00 PM. Members of the audience are welcome to stay after Saturday’s concert for a special onstage “Dialogue with Jahja,” which will be a question and answer session with Augustin Hadelich. Art and Yoga at the Museum

This spring, the San Diego Museum of Art is featuring two Asian art shows, Echoes of the Past and Dyeing Elegance. Echoes of the Past features some of the artwork of the Buddhist cave temples of Xiangtangshan, located in Northern China. Built in the 6th century, these limestone caves once contained a large amount of statues. Unfortunately, in the last 100 years, the statues were removed piecemeal for sale. This exhibit contains 14 pieces of art from the cave and six other pieces from the same period. Modern technology allows for a virtual reconstruction of the caves and visitors to the exhibit can interact with these images using touch-screen technology.

Dyeing Elegance features the unique wax-resist dyeing art of Japanese artist Kuboku Takaku and his daughter Hisako. Last century, Takaku developed this unique dyeing method and Hisako, still creating today, creates some of the most sought-after artwork in Japan. Their artwork combines traditional Japanese motifs with modern sensibilities. This exhibit will showcase both Kobuku and Hisako’s multiple media artwork.

Another ancient tradition that comes from the East is yoga. While the exact origins of yoga are not certain, evidence points to its existence as early as 3000 BC. More than just a physical practice, yoga is shown to improve concentration and relieve stress. To enhance visitors' immersion into Eastern culture for these two exhibits, the museum is offering yoga classes on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, now until April 18th. Teacher Amy Hyde is experienced in teaching Iyengar yoga, a discipline that emphasizes proper technique, making this class suitable for all levels of practice.

But she is actually Norina, a woman in love with the nephew. John Lill Performing Through Mainly Mozart

Tchaikovskys Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake

Tonight and tomorrow, February 14 and 15, the Moscow Festival Ballet will perform two of Tchaikovsky's most beloved ballets: The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy an evening of beauty, splendor and romance. The Moscow Festival Ballet is one of Russia's most celebrated ballet companies and is appearing as one of the San Diego Symphony's Winter Special performances (though the Symphony will not be performing—the ballet will be danced to pre-recorded music).

On Wednesday night, Swan Lake begins at 7:30pm. Though the ballet was originally choreographed by Julius Reisinger, it is Marius Petipa's 1895 revival that has become the standard for most performances. The ballet tells the story of Odette, the Russian folklore princess transformed into a swan by the evil Rotbart until she is rescued by the love of Prince Siegfried.

San Diego Restaurant Week 2012

January 15-20, 2012 is San Diego Restaurant Week. It's a great opportunity to support local restaurants and have an exquisite meal at the same time. During this twice-annual event, 180 of San Diego's best restaurants offer prix fixe menus, many of them for lunch as well as dinner. Hotel del Coronado Ice Skating

Big Bay Balloon Parade

Every year, San Diego celebrates the holiday season with the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. This Southern California tradition is billed as "America's largest balloon parade." Enjoy a procession of marching bands, floats, drill teams and balloons as they make their way through the beautiful bayside streets of downtown San Diego.

The grandstands for the parade are located in front of the Maritime Museum. Seats in the stands will give you the best view of the performances and can be purchased for $20 on a will-call basis. You can also view the parade from street-side anywhere along the parade route for free. The parade begins at 10am following the start of the Bumblebee 5K.

A Holiday Garden of Lights

Experience a winter wonderland right in California, just a short drive from Rancho Santa Fe. Until December 30, the beautiful San Diego Botanic Garden has been transformed into a Garden of Lights to celebrate the season. Stroll through the park and enjoy the over 100,000 lights illuminating the Garden. Listen to live music from 6pm to 8pm as you enjoy the beauty of the Poinsettia Garden or the novelty of the Nutcracker exhibit. The lower portions of the garden are accessible by wagon rides drawn by blond Belgian draft horses.

Children will especially enjoy roasting marshmallows around the Lawn Garden Campfire, and Santa will be in town each night leading up to Christmas Eve from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. There will also be a variety of kids' crafting opportunities. Weather permitting, the garden will have snow for sledding, so make sure to bring your equipment. If you get too cold, treat yourself to a glass of hot mulled wine, coffee or hot chocolate.

The Garden of Lights will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but open again from December 26-30. Admission is $6 for members, $12 for non-members, $8 for seniors, military and students and only $4 for kids ages 3-12. Children 2 and under get in free, and there's no charge for parking.
